With a trial allowing grassroots referee to wear body cameras set to begin in 2023, The Ref Cam is one of the first video features on this topic.
When I first embarked on the project, I wanted to use this opportunity to give a voice to referees. Originally, I had my focus set on highlighting the abuse of grassroot referees. However, after the news around the referee bodycam trial was released at the start of October, it felt like the perfect opportunity to explore whether this would be the right move for the game. It opened up the discussion around this new piece of legislation and the impact it could have on officials.
This is where The Ref Cam was born.
I knew from the outset I wanted to speak to interviewees at all different levels of the football pyramid to get a wide range of perspectives. I cannot speak highly enough of the contributors who were articulate, engaging and personable. Most importantly, they had a clear love for the game and cared about the future of referees.
